On 8th September, the Belarusian Ice Hockey Federation, BIHF, announced that it will hold a championship in memory of Team Belarus Captain Ruslan Salei, (Saley) and fellow members of the Yaroslavl Lokomotiv hockey team who were among 43 people killed when the chartered plane they were in crashed shortly after take off on Wednesday. Only two people survived the crash and they are both in critical condition, and are reported to be in induced comas.

The team was heading to play the opening game of the season in Minsk, and the Dinamo Minsk will play in the games which are expected to be played in the Fall, with at least three other clubs taking part, according to the Federation Chairman Yawhen Vorsin.

Thirty six Lokomotiv members were killed when the Yak-42 airplane went down near Yaroslavl in good weather on Wednesday. Preliminary reports say that all three engines were running at the time of the crash, according to data from the black box which has been recovered from the site.

Hockey players and fans around the world are in mourning, and the club is receiving many messages of sympathy, including a letter from Manchester United Football Club in England. Back in 1958, Man U lost 8 players who were killed in a p[lane crash in Munich, and they still feel that loss today.

Meanwhile, as the mourning continues, the Kontinental Hockey League has received word that at least 35 players have indicated that they are willing to be part of the new Yaroslavl Lokomotiv hockey team which will be formed in memory of those players and coaches killed on Wednesday in Russia. Although the season’s first game had started on Wednesday when news of the crash was announced, the game stopped as everyone was in shock. The season will not open before 12 September, but will go ahead with 24 teams in the league as previously.
