On Sunday, the Boeing Co. announced that it has now completed the contractual delivery of the first 787 Dreamliner aircraft, with the formal documents being signed by Boeing and All Nippon Airlines Co. or ANA of Japan, over three years later than Boeing had originally scheduled.

The Boeing 787 Dreamliner is a long range aircraft with a mid-size wide body, and twin engines and the aircraft seats between 210 and 290 passengers, depending on the seat arrangements. Boeing is excited about this jet airliner because they claim it is the most fuel efficient airliner according to Boeing, because it uses composite materials, plastic reinforced by carbon-fiber, for most of its construction rather than aluminum and so it is much lighter.

Dreamliner had its first test flight in December 2009, and completed its flight testing by August 2011. The aircraft is expected to use 20 per cent less fuel than the Boeing 767 which is of a similar size. With the cost of fuel so high, this is a huge selling feature of the aircraft.

Because the aircraft has been delayed so much, it has meant that Boeing has had to pay compensation to its customers, which has added hugely to its cost. However, there have been 827 Boeing 787s ordered by 59 customers. ANA have ordered 55 of these.

The first 787 was produced by Boeing in their Everett factory in Washington State, where there will be celebrations this week with a delivery ceremony on Monday, and the plane will flyaway on Tuesday with its new owners All Nippon Airlines.

ANA has said that the aircraft will be used on its domestic Haneda-Okayama route beginning in November of this year.
