Boy found alive one day after bullet train crash in China kills at least 43, injuring 200 or more.

In Wenzhou, a city in the province of Zhejiang, China, a boy was discovered unconscious inside the wreckage of a train on Sunday, one day after the a train from Hangzhou to Wenzhou stalled because of being hit by lightning while it was on a bridge, and was then rear ended by a train which was traveling from Beijing to Fuzhou. Firefighters found the 4 year old boy on Sunday afternoon and rushed the boy to hospital.

The crash was horrific, forcing a carriage off the tracks onto the ground below. At least 43 were killed and over 200 injured in the accident. There were some 1400 passengers on the trains at the time. As a result at of this accident three senior railway officials are reported to have been fired.

China has spent billions of dollars on its transport system of late so it could connect its cities by high speed rail, but for the second time in weeks, storms have been blamed with causing problems with the system. Earlier in July a power failure caused a 90 minute delay on the new line which runs from Beijing to Shanghai, and the failure of power was induced by the storm.

It was late in June that the Beijing to Shanghai line opened, and it was a great source of pride, as the 1300km trip took less than 5 hours and connected the capital with the financial center. It is unclear at present how much this deadly accident will influence train travel in the future in China.

So far, officials have not explained why the oncoming bullet train was not able to stop to avoid the crash, or whether the engineers had taken into account the possibility of lightning strikes.
