In new testing conducted by the Breast Cancer Fund, BPA, or bisphenol-A was discovered in all of the twelve cans which it tested, six which were purchased in California and six in Wisconsin. Now this size of study is very small, as the Breast Cancer Fund agreed, but it is extremely concerned since the cans it tested were all for products which children regularly consume.

Bisphenol-A has been linked to breast cancer as well as infertility, diabetes and obesity.

In 2008, BPA was in the news when it was shown that this ingredient leaches out of plastic when it is heated producing a product which is similar to the hormone estrogen. Since it was used for baby bottles, as well as water bottles, the Canadian government banned the product from baby bottles, and although not banned by the United States government at that time, many of the leading manufacturers of baby bottles voluntarily removed BPA from their bottles.

However, BPA is used in the resin which is used as a coating in metal cans, the cans that are used for many food products. The Food and Drug Administration, FDA, in the United States have also done testing on foods stored in cans, and they discovered BPA in 71 of the 78 canned foods which they sampled. Again this is not a huge sample, and hopefully more research will be carried out in the near future to provide some more accurate data.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has estimated that a level of 50 parts per billion is a safe daily level – the 12 tested cans had an average level for BPAs of 49 parts per billion, but again that was a small sample.

The great concern is for children consuming BPA on a regular basis from the canned goods which they eat, foods like pasta, soups or canned vegetables. Eaten regularly, the levels of BPAs in their bodies are only likely to increase. However, there are now some companies such as Eden Organics, who are not using BPAs in their canned goods, but these companies do not yet can the children friendly foods like pasta in tomato sauce.
