On Monday, Canada began mourning the loss their Opposition Leader Jack Layton, who lost his battle with cancer, despite his optimism and his fighting spirit that he would be back at work in September.

Mr. Layton was a well liked and respected politician, something that cannot be said of many in the political world, and it is going to leave a huge position to be filled in the New Democratic Party, NDP. He announced in July that he was suffering from a new cancer, but declined to say what exactly, but he was expecting to beat this latest set back, although at the press conference announcing his sick leave, he appeared very frail and gaunt.

The Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, had this to say upon hearing of the death of Mr. Layton.
“When I last spoke with Jack following his announcement in July, I wished him well and he told me he’d be seeing me in the House of Commons in the Fall. This, sadly, will no longer come to pass. On behalf of all Canadians, I salute Jack’s contribution to public life, a contribution that will be sorely missed. I know one thing: Jack gave his fight against cancer everything he had. Indeed, Jack never backed down from any fight. To his wife Olivia, his family, and to his colleagues and friends, Laureen and I offer our heartfelt condolences. Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this most difficult time.”

Condolences are pouring in from many different areas of the country, all lamenting the death of such a fine person. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Mr. Layton’s family at this time.
