Cheerios Turn 70 This Year

Cheerios have been around for 70 years

Cheerios have been around for 70 years, and are marketed as a heart-healthy breakfast

The General Mills cereal Cheerios has been around for 70 years this year, and it has proved to be one of the most popular cereals with one in eight of all the cereals sold in the United States being a box of Cheerios of one kind or another.

In Buffalo ,New York, the General Mills plant has been producing Cheerios since 1941, although they were originally called Cheerioats, and more than ten different shapes and sizes were considered before the “O” was decided upon. They changed their name to Cheerios after 4 years.

It was 1979 before Honey Nut Cheerios were introduced, and then in !988 Apple Cinnamon Cheerios were introduced to the public, with Multigrain following in 1992. By 2009, Honey Nut Cheerios began to outsell the original Cheerios. It was 1999 that General Mills began focusing their marketing of Cheerios as a healthy cereal, because it is made from whole grain oats, and has 3 grams of fiber and only one gram of sugar for each serving.

To celebrate this milestone, the city of Buffalo has included a 26 June Cheerios breakfast as part of its Citybration Festival, with the breakfast being in sight of the General Mills facility where Cheerios are still made.
