The death of Don Lapre is being investigated after he was discovered dead in his jail cell in Florence, Arizona, on Sunday. Suicide is suspected, as he has tried to commit suicide at least once before. Lapre was due to attend his trial for fraud this week.

Don Lapre, who was 47, dropped out of high school, and became involved in multilevel marketing. In the early to mid 1990s he ran infomercials, and in 1992 began broadcasting “The Making Money Show with Don Lapre”. His company sold products such as “The Greatest Vitamin in the World” as well as the “Making Money Package”, but his business plans were found not to work for many people, and there were many complaints.

In June of this year, Lapre was charged with 41 counts of conspiracy and fraud including promotional money laundering, charges all connected to his online internet businesses. He failed to appear in court to face these charges and was arrested on 24 June.

Based in Arizona, the American TV pitchman is reported to have received millions of dollars from his alleged scam of 220,000 people between 2004 and 2007, using a pyramid scheme to sell vitamins which did not give the health benefits claimed. Due to the many complaints, his business was shut down in 2007.

On his website donlapre.com Lapre denies having done anything wrong, under the heading of “Never Stop Dreaming….”
