Earthquake Of 6.2 Magnitude Strikes Off Coast Of Japan

An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.2 struck off the northeast coast of japan late on Thursday, local time, with buildings swaying in Tokyo and elsewhere. The Japan Meteorological Agency said that there was no danger from a tsunami, and they had not had any immediate reports of damage or injuries. However, they did say that there could be a slight change in the level of the sea because of the quake.

According to the United States Geological Survey, the epicentre was 156 km northeast of Tokyo, and was at a depth of 10 km, occurring at 5pm local time.

The Tokyo Electric Power Company said there was no new damage to the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant which was hit so hard by the earthquake and tsunami on 11 March which killed thousands, and caused so much damage.

Japan is located at the junction of four tectonic plates which continue to slip and slide, the area is frequently troubled by earthquakes and aftershocks, and Japan typically experiences some of the strongest quakes each year.

Cuba also experienced n earthquake of magnitude 6.0 on Thursday, the USGS said, and there was minor earthquake activity in California, but that this level of earthquake activity is not unusual.
