An explosion at a nuclear waste treatment plant in the south of France has killed one person and injured four others, but the company has reported that there has been no radiation leaked outside of the site. A spokeswoman for Electricite de France said that the Centraco plant which is near Marcoule said there were no chemical leaks or radioactive leaks.

In news of the explosion, shares in EDF are reported to have slumped by over seven per cent in Paris.

The nuclear plants in France, as in many other countries, are undergoing safety checks as a result of the nuclear disaster in Japan in March of this year, caused by an earthquake and tsunami, to discover whether France’s plants can withstand floods, earthquakes, as well as a loss of power, as happened in Japan.

The blast at the plant was in a furnace room and it was brought under control at about 1 p.m. local time, with no damage to the structure of the building. The site is about 130 kilometers from Marseille, the second largest city in France.

France relies on nuclear energy for about 80 per cent of its electricity. An investigation is taking place to discover the cause of the explosion.
