Facebook is to end its daily Deals discount program it was announced on Friday, although its Check-in Program will remain.

After launching the program called Deals on Facebook in April, Facebook, the social networking web site  has now decided that it will be ending the program in the next few weeks or months. However the Facebook Check-In Deals which launched in November will remain. The announcement was made on Friday, but there was no reason given for the decision, which now leaves the field open for even more of the daily deal sites like Groupon which have proved successful so far.

In an email, a Facebook spokesperson said  “After testing Deals for four months, we’ve decided to end our Deals product in the coming weeks. We think there is a lot of power in a social approach to driving people into local businesses. We remain committed to building products to help local businesses connect with people, like Ads, Pages, Sponsored Stories, and Check-in Deals. We’ve learned a lot from our test and we’ll continue to evaluate how to best serve local businesses.”

The Check-in Deals program is a reward program for mobile users, by providing them with discounts when they check in at different locations using the Facebook app. Facebook Places which was launched in August 2010 to allow people to let their friends know where they were was discontinued this week, just one year later.
