Lee Roy Selmon, NFL Hall of Famer is reported to be in critical condition after a stroke on Friday.

It was reported on Saturday morning that Lee Roy Selmon, a former NFL defensive linesman, and a Hall of Famer was hospitalized on Friday after suffering a stroke. He is 56 and remains in “critical condition” according to hospital sources, although he has shown some signs of improvement.

Selmon was picked in 1976 by the expansion team, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he joined his older brother Dewey. He won the team’s Rookie of the year award in his first season with them, and he was named the NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 1979. He was forced to retire in 1984 because of a back injury, and the Buccaneers later retired his number 63 jersey.

Even when Selmon retired from professional football, he remained in Tampa, Florida, and from 1993 ton 2001 he served as an assistant athletic director at the University of South Florida, before stepping up as the athletic director for the university.
