Ex-NHL player Brendan Shanahan has not only taken the position with the National Hockey League as the VP of Hockey and Business Development, but has already implemented some tough penalties – and the regular season has not even started yet.

While Shanahan’s predecessor, who was Colin Campbell, had a career which was marked with inconsistencies, Shanahan is looking to make a bold clear statement upfront, and has better tools with which to implement it. He has been given the okay from the National Hockey League to give stiffer suspensions for illegal hits, and Rule 48, which is illegal hits to the head, has also been given more leeway this season.

Shanahan, whose statistics as a player included 600 goals and approximately 2,000 penalty minutes, is able to identify with the majority of players on the ice, whether they are there for heavy hitting or goal scoring.

Shanahan kicked off the 2011/2012 season with giving 5 suspensions, including an 11 game suspension and over $500,000 fine to James Wisniewski of the Columbus Blue Jackets, who delivered a late head shot with his elbow at the end of the third period against the Minnesota Wild last Friday night. Shanahan has made it clear that moving forward, repeat offenders such as Wisniewski, will be subject to harsher penalties, while first time offenders will be let off with lighter punishments.
