It seems that no one is immune to the forces of nature, since on Saturday electrical storms and strong winds blew over tents injuring seven and cut short the Pope’s speech about defending traditional marriage during events at the World Youth Day celebrations in Madrid, Spain. Heavy rain soaked the crowd, and one person suffered from a broken leg.

Some pilgrims were not able to receive Holy Communion as a result of the temporary chapels being blown over, but also because the sacrament wafers were damaged by the storm.

Earlier in the day, the Health services reported that they had needed to treat over 2,000 people, many for heat exhaustion when the temperatures rose above 40C.

Pope Benedict XVI spent four days on this visit, one which was not as smooth running as previously due to protests as well as weather conditions. Earlier this week protesters clashed with police over the cost of putting on such an event which over one and a half pilgrims attended.

The Pope ended the World Youth Day celebrations today with a Mass, at the end of which Rio de Janeiro was announced as the country to host the next event which will be in 2013.
