7 students have been charged by N. Y. officials in a SAT examination cheating scandal.

Criminal charges have been announced against a college student from New York who is alleged to have accepted payment on at least six occasions for sitting the SAT exam on their behalf. The SAT Reasoning Test is a standardized test which is used in the United States for college admissions, and it is administered by the Educational Testing Service.

Sam Eshaghoff is the 19 year old who is charged with scheming to defraud, as well as criminal impersonation and falsifying business records.. His attorney, Matin Emouna, has said that his client denies the charges against him. Eshaghoff attended the Great Neck North High School in New York, and graduated in 2010. He then spent one year at the University of Michigan before he transferred to Atlanta to attend Emory University.

Earlier this year members of the faculty at the Great Neck North High School apparently heard rumors that students were paying between $1,500 to $2,500 for someone else to take the SAT tests for them.  Staff looked into the results of the tests and discovered that six students had higher SAT results than they were expected to achieve based on their academic records.

Apparently, the students involved registered to take the examination at schools where they were not known, and it is alleged that Eshaghoff used his picture identification but the other student’s name to gain entrance to the examination. it is also alleged that Eshaghoff flew back from college to take two exams on one weekend.

These six students have not been named because of their ages, but they have been arrested and have been charged with misdemeanor offenses. If Eshaghoff is found guilty of the charges against him he could spend up to 4 years in jail.

Investigations are also underway to see if any other SAT deceptions have taken place in other high schools in the area.

Great Neck North High School is a top rated academic school, which has had many of its students become well-known. Emily Hughes, who went on to become a member of the United States Figure Skating Team in the 2006 Winter Olympics, and Andy Kaufman the comedian and actor both attended Great Neck North High School.
