Tea Contains Unlisted Ingredients, Study Shows

Study finds that tea has ingredients in it that are not listed on the label.

A study by three New York City high school students and published in Scientific Reports, the nature journal, showed that the teas they tested contained ingredients which were not mentioned on the label.

The students, Catherine Gamble, Rohan Kirpekar and Grace You worked under the supervision of staff from Rockefeller University, and they tested 70 teas and 60 herbal teas which came from 17 countries and 33 different companies. The DNA was extracted from the tea, and then sent to a sequencing facility, and the results from that used to identify the other ingredients in the tea, using the GenBank database which is maintained by the united States National Library of Medicine.

Results showed that about 4 per cent of the plain teas contained other plant material, while for the herbal products, over one third of them contained ingredients which were not on the label, such as bluegrass and white goosefoot which are weeds.Four of the herbal teas contained leaves from the parsley family, while 7 contained chamomile which is used as a calming, night time tea by many.

Now while many of the added ingredients are for the most part harmless, unless you happen to be allergic to that particular plant, many of the teas did contain plants that are often found in teas, but they just were not listed on the label for some reason.

With thousands of people drinking tea all over the world, it is expected that this study will result in more investigations into what we are actually putting in our tea cups besides water.
