Victoria Cops wins at the World Police and Fire Games held in New York City. Lane Douglas-Hunt, one of the gold medal winners from Victoria, B.C. is shown working out.

Lane Douglas-Hunt a 24 year old police constable working in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada won the Toughest Competitor Alive competition this week in New York City where the 2011 World Police and Fire Games were being held, and she won this despite being allegedly stabbed by a shoplifter in January 2011.

During the alleged attack Douglas-Hunt received severe stab wounds which required surgery to her left hand, and needed months of rehabilitation. She was unable to work out for two months. Guy Hervé Seguin has been charged with attempted murder in the incident which occurred on 17th January, but his trial is not until in February 2012.

In a statement, Douglas-Hunt said “It was a long day of competition, but it is so rewarding to come away with the medal. It was very cool to be competing against fellow cops and firefighters from around the world and collectively celebrate our accomplishments and success.”

The event involves a 5 km cross country run,  the shot put event, a 100 m swim and a 100 m sprint, a 20 foot rope climb as well as a bench press component, pull-ups and an obstacle course.

Douglas-Hunt was not the only Victoria police officer to receive an award, as Sgt. Mike Chicorelli and canine officer Max won a gold medal in the vehicle searches for explosives detection and a bronze medal for building searches on Wednesday.

The World Police and Fire Games are held every two years and are open to active and retired law enforcement personnel as well as the fire service. There were 65 sports events this year with some 15,000 competitors from 70 countries.
