The Washington Monument in the District of Columbia is closed for inspection and repairs after earthquake damage in August.

The Washington Monument in the District of Columbia has been closed indefinitely after the earthquake on 23 August caused more damage than was originally realized.

On Monday the National Parks Service gave more details about the damage to the monument after the East Coast was hit by a magnitude 5.8 earthquake on 23 August. There were no injuries at the monument, but the video taken inside the building shows plaster falling from the ceiling, while visitors try to escape from the building as fast as they can.

An inspection of the inside of the building has now been completed, but it still remains for the outside to be inspected. This will begin on Tuesday and is expected to take five days. Engineers will rappel down the monument to inspect the outside for damage to the mortar.

The building was completed in 1884, and is made from marble, granite and gneiss ( a type of rock), and the National Parks Service say that it is the tallest stone building in the world. It stands a little over 555 feet tall. As a result of the earthquake, cracks appeared  as mortar fell, and this led to water seeping into the building, especially when Hurricane Irene passed through and caused more water damage. The interior elevator at the Washington Monument needs repair too, as it only travels about halfway right now.

Once the full damage has been assessed, the length of time needed for repairs will be estimated, but for now the Washington Monument will remain closed to all tourists and visitors.
