Western Japan has been hit by Typhoon Talas causing at least 20 deaths and thousands of evacuations because of flooding and landslides.

Typhoon Talas, one of the deadliest recently made landfall in Japan on Saturday and has left at least 20 people dead, with many more missing, after rivers flooded and swept away buildings and caused landslides which crushed homes.

With heavy rains triggering more landslides, the government has ordered the evacuation of 460,000 people in the west and central Japan regions. However, there are hundreds of others reported stranded because of the flooded rivers, and collapsed bridges, and as a result of the record rainfall which has fallen in some areas of Japan, this is the worst storm since 2004.

The typhoon has caused record amount of rainfall in some areas, making it the worst storm to hit the country since 2004 when in September over 40 people died and then in October more than 90 people were killed or are missing and presumed dead.

The meteorological agency in Japan has warned of more heavy rains, as well as strong winds which will cause more floods and mudslides. In fact, landslide warnings have been issued in nearly all of the country’s prefectures.
